Flat Plan for the Double Page Spread...

For my double page spread, there are drop capitals, for the letters of the artist's name. There is a medium long shot of the artist singing. The questions are in blue to make them look different. I have used mainly black white and baby blue to keep it simple and consistent with the rest of the magazine. I decided to add some yellow to make the title stand out, and it matches with black. There is a picture of another artist as they could be included in the interview. I used a medium-close up on the second page, so that you can see the artist's expression but you can still see what she is wearing, because people like to look at the artist's dress sense.

Scamp for Contents Page.

This is some of the flat plan for my contents page. I used that font for the title 'Contents' because it looks different, so consumers would like it. There is a picture at the top to link to the page title and it would make the reader want to read more about it. The head and shoulder shot of the artist in the bottom half of the page holds everything together, because it is big, and it bleeds to the end of the page and it is also behind the page numbers and teasers, so it links to everything on the page.

Shot List

These are the camera shots I will be using in my music magazine. I chose to use a medium shot for the front cover, because I like the look that it has. I am going to cut out the picture of the model in Photoshop to give the magazine a 'clean' and fresh look. For the double-page spread the model is in a more relaxed position, to give a more relaxed feeling, as it will include an interview and it will relate to getting 'close' to the artist. I am going to cut out the model for the front page so that I can place it on a plain background. The two-shot is for the contents page; it is for a band in another article of the magazine. The sixth shot is for the double page spread. The model will be looking up, and the picture will be placed at the bottom of text to make it seem as if the model is reading the text.

Scamp for front cover.

I named my magazine 'Buzzin' because I think it will appeal more to my target audience which are teenagers because that is the kind of language that teenagers use. The masthead gives the idea that it is a successful company, if it was one. The model has one hand on her hip and she is looking down at the camera to make her look powerful. The artists name is on a blue background to make it stand out and show that she is an important artist. The price is £3.50 as it is not too high or low and it shows that the magazine has value. The colours used are not too sharp and the amount of colours used are limited to a minimum so that they do not clash with each other and so that it does not look overcrowded. I placed the slogan in the top left corner because that is where people normally read from first. The artist is in the centre of the page to show that there is a lot of important information that the audience would want to find out. There are a lot of teasers and pull quotes surrounding the artist to make the target audience want to read more about an article as well. There are featured artists so that if people like an artist from it they would be more likely to buy the magazine.

Reader Profile

Kesha is a 16 year old studying her first year of media studies at college. She listens to R’n’B and hip hop in her spare time and her interests are singing and dancing, she can also play the guitar. She has a YouTube page where she has about 48 videos of her singing and has 162 subscribers. She would love to meet Beyonce as she is her biggest influence in R&B music. She downloads her music from iTunes and uses the internet at least two hours everyday. ‘Vibe’ is her favourite music magazine and she enjoys attending live music events of her favourite artists every three months. She has a part time job in a retail shop where she earns £40 each week. After university Kesha wants to get signed to a recording company and take off with her singing career. Kesha is the typical reader for my magazine because she is female, she is a 16 year old teenager and she loves female R&B artists like Beyonce and Mariah Carey, as they are a big influence on her right now, so I think she would want to find out the lastest gossip and news about her favourite celebrities.

Question seven.

I decided to ask about what topic people like to read about most in articles, so that I can base the interview on my double - page spread about subjects like that. Most people chose 'celebrity relationships and personal life', 'Succes stories' and 'celebrity fashion sense'.

Question 6

I asked people what they want more of in magazines so that I could add more of that in my magazine. Most people said celebrity posters, the top celebrities in charts and latest gossip or interviews and this information is displayed effectively in this pie chart.

Question 5...

From my research I found out which parts of the magazine I should make most obvious and appealing to the reader. These are celebrity pictures, celebrity articles and free posters.

Question four: Mastheads.

It is difficult to think of a suitable magazine name for the genre of R&B. 'Bounce' was the most popular name, but it links more to pop music so changed it to 'Rhythm' which was the second most popular name.

Colour Scheme.

The third question I asked in my questionnaire was about the kind of colour schemes that my target audience would be attracted to. The two most popular combinations were black, baby blue, white and black, yellow, white.

How much would you pay for a magazine?

The second question in my questionnaire asked my target audiencehow much they would be willing to pay for a music magazine. I chose this question in order to come up with a reasonable price for my magazine and fit it to my target audience.

Some people said that they would pay less than £1 and most people said that they would be willing to pay £1 - £1.90 or £2.50 - £3.50. and the target audience I chose are young people aged 16-19 who are interested in R&B music. I think that they opted for the lower price range because it is hard for some people to get a part time job and on top of that, university fees are expensive.

Questionnaire.

The first question in my questionnaire asked people who their favourite music artist is. From this question I wanted to find out about the type of artists that my target audience likes, so that I can use that particular artists' style as an inspiration for the artist featured in the my magazine. This was an open ended question in order to get lots of different artists that people like and a range of viewpoints. Overall there were a lot of artists chosen, but some people did not know who to choose because there are so many out there.

Different types of research and data types

Some of the different ways to carry out research are to use a questionnaire, interview or experiment. I am going to carry out a questionnaire to find out about the target audience for my music magazine.

The advantages to using a questionnaire for research are that : -
  • it produces a lot of standardised data.
  • the data can be collected quickly and conveniently.
  • the data is replicable and is usually easy to analyse.
  • there is wide - ranging sample possible.
  • new ideas for research can be suggested.
  • it is good for research on socially-sensitive matters as people tend to disclose more to this.
Types of data
Quantitative data : - analysis that uses numerical data. This type of data can be obtained by using closed questions, like, 'Do you like to listen to music?', which would require either a 'yes' or 'no' answer.

Qualitative data : -  analysis that focuses more on words rather than numbers. Open questions would be used to collect this sort of data for example, 'Why do you like pop music?' The answer to this would require personal opinions.

Vibe double page spread

This double page spread is innovative because the space at the top of the page is used efficiently and still looks good because the poses used look interesting and the target audience may be able to the artist more. The artist in colour contrasts with the rest of the article, she is the centre of attention and the artist's name is in blue which signals that the article is all about her. The quote which is next to the artist's leg is in black and the artist's name is in bight blue, this shows that she has a lot of importance in the article and possibly the music industry.
